Sarah Drummond, Watercolor Artist
I am a Colorado artist enthralled by the natural world! In a world where photographic images are so universal, I believe that an artist’s rendition sends a message to the viewer that the subject deserves a closer look and greater attention than a “snapshot.” To that end, my work is realistic and representational but often includes abstract or philosophical components. I enjoy the challenge of thinking backwards when planning a block print and the ever-present element of surprise when the final product emerges from the press. However, watercolor is my favorite plein air medium because of its spontaneity and immediacy.
I grew up drawing and painting and pursued a variety of media throughout college and graduate schools with tandem degrees in biology and art. While I sometimes use my own photographs as references, I much prefer to work from life and most of my work is completed outdoors through patient hours of watching. One of the most important tools in my artistic repertoire is a pair of binoculars! Although I grew up in the Pikes Peak region on Colorado’s Front Range, my great-grandparents homesteaded in the Four Corners area and founded the town of Lewis. I’m overjoyed and inspired to return to my Cortez roots. I also draw inspiration from my travels as a wilderness guide in southeast Alaska and the Pacific northwest. My partner, Shane Blair, is a skilled woodworker and creates frames for the artwork you see here. When we're not exploring, my husband and I live, work, and create in Cortez, CO.
