CLYDE JOHNSON - LAMPS
Floating Rock Lamps started about eight years ago when Clyde Johnson needed a couple lamps for his home. Since then he has built 28 lamps.
The lamp building process is problem-solving from the start. First deciding how the wood will sit balanced on the table, where a lampshade can be attached, the shape for the shade, how it casts light, then how to get wires through it. The lamps use mica for the shade, from a source in North Carolina that sells sheets of mica fused with epoxy. Shade frames are built with 3/16 steel rod for the shade frame and all the steel connections are welded, not soldered. The mica is 1/16 or 1/32 thick, it is rigid and bends when heated, holding its shape when cooled. After cutting and bending the mica pieces, they are glued to the steel frames. The lamps are very strong.
Clyde has saved some very unique pieces of wood that may some day become floor lamps, and intentions to continue exploring this area for more juniper branches and cottonwood roots for table lamps. He has also built wall mounted light fixtures and can do custom work.
