Stained Glass and Jewelry
Justin Richard (Dick) Young
In 1979, Dick’s wife, Kathy, wanted a stained glass bathroom window in their home in Houston, Texas. Kathy purchased a set of tools and a series of lessons as a birthday present for Dick. Kathy got her window and Dick discovered a hobby that was a challenge and fun. Stained glass became a source of gifts for friends and family. Soon people were asking Dick to make a jewelry box for their special person and that was the beginning of Justin’s Glass Art. In 1988, the Young’s moved to Mancos as teachers in the Mancos School District. After retiring from teaching, Dick took on glass as an avocation. He expanded his portfolio to include jewelry boxes, lampshades, kaleidoscopes, snowflakes and window hangings. Several years ago he began making dichroic jewelry. Dick also has taught glass classes at school, at a local craft store, and in his home. He does custom windows, sidelights and doors.
