Mosaic Artwork
Blending textures, colors, searching out interesting materials at thrift stores and yard sales, and understanding the glues, grouts, and substrates involved is ever-evolving.
I begin a piece with a loose plan, and let it flow and evolve and surprise me as it takes form. My goal is to draw people into my image, first from far away. When I first began making mosaics, the process became irresistible. To experience my mosaics as a whole, then drawing the viewer closer, until they are examining each piece separately, then finally drawing back to observe it fully again. My intention is to surprise and delight.
Abstractly, I feel the pieces of a mosaic are a metaphor for the little experiences, sights, and occurrences which combine to make us who we are as an individual.
As a mid-western transplant raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, I arrived in SW Colorado fresh from receiving my B.F.A. in printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1981. My journey continues to be an adventure that ultimately fuels my power of observation and feeds my soul.
