This class focuses on recreating the visual effect of traditional Japanese raku pottery on a gourd. Raku involves firing pottery at low temperatures and then quickly removing it from the kiln and placing it into sawdust or other combustible materials, resulting in a unique, often crackled or iridescent surface. The "faux" aspect means achieving this look without a kiln and the traditional raku firing process, often using paint, inks, or other finishes to mimic the effects. Come explore this unique art technique of layering in many textures and colors to achieve the look of raku pottery! Each oil lamp will be completely unique as we combine our rainbow of colors.

This workshop invites participants to transform ordinary gourds into vibrant fall-themed art using alcohol dyes and sea grass. When the dyes are mixed, blended or washed together they can create a plethora of vibrant colors. We will daub, drip, sponge, paint, and blend with alcohol inks. Inspired by the beauty of autumn foliage, students will learn to create stunning, dynamic designs on these natural surfaces. Take home a beautiful gourd bowl you created that will make an outstanding centerpiece for the holidays.
