Beth Wheeler has been interested in letter forms since she was a child, doodling letters and words for hours, not
knowing that calligraphy [which means beautiful writing] existed. After nine years of teaching elementary school, Beth first studied calligraphy in 1988 at San Juan College in Farmington
New Mexico. She continues this life long study by attending workshops at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico nearly every summer, learning from the finest calligraphers in the
world. She has also studied lettering and design in England. In addition to pen and Western brush, Beth works in Chinese brush lettering and has recently
delved into the book arts.
"As an artists and educator I feel strongly about the words I write. I want to make people think, myself
included". "Calligraphy requires much patience, discipline, and practice." "To me, it's a meditation where I have to be in the
present."
A native of Indiana, Beth has made Southwestern Colorado her home since 1983. She draws her inspiration from the
natural world, traveling, and from the philosophies of different cultures. She lives with her husband in the Mancos Valley where they are co-owners of Custom
Calligraphy and Frame.
